No surprises in the Barnett as all the results went to the higher graded players. Tournament favourite, Phil Watson, sat this one out but should be back next round to start his title bid.

CONTROLLER'S NOTES - ROUND 1

The Hutchinson saw a comfortable win for Derek Ludlam and an uncomfortable win for Mark McGinty, whose knight 'sacrifice' (yeah, we believe you Mark!) against Dave Young proved to be a catalyst that opened up the game. Never a dull one between these two...

CONTROLLER'S NOTES - ROUND 1

After having only 2 entrants last year, the Bak increased by 11. That's a percentage increase of (that's 2 divided by 11, carry the 1, multiply by 100, add a couple more for good luck I think which comes to), a lot. Bingley's new boys had a tough start facing more experienced opponents but they gave a good account of themselves, especially Brendan Martin who held last year's winner, Tony Lightowler to a draw. Shipley's new player, Simon Hopker went one better as he took a full point off of his opponent.
