To celebrate Ilkley Chess Club’s 125th anniversary International Master Richard Palliser, Yorkshire’s leading player, was invited to play up to 30 local players simultaneously at Ben Rhydding Methodist Church Hall in September. The 100th anniversary was similarly celebrated with a display by Grandmaster Tony Miles. Of those who played against Tony Miles 25 years ago from Ilkley Chess Club, Arthur Thompson, Peter Ward and David Adam re-appeared with two returning friends from Shipley Keith Troubridge and Derrick Mason.

As Bradford DCA members know, Richard Palliser is a distinguished international chess player and a very well respected author, particularly on chess opening theory. The event was supported by Bradford District Chess Association who provided ten league players who helped provide very stiff opposition.

Although all players had the black pieces, Richard had to concede defeat to one of Ilkley’s top players, Mark Birkin and also to agree draws with 5 Ilkley players and 4 four other BDCA players. Considering the strength of the entrants this was a considerable feat and to cap the day Richard presented book prizes to the five best games played against him. His sportsmanship and participation was exemplary. The afternoon was captured in a montage of pictures……..
